You do not need your own factory to start a sportswear brand. Many successful labels work with a private label manufacturer that makes their designs and adds their branding. This guide walks through the steps, from your first tech pack to your first bulk order.
1. Define your niche before you start a sportswear brand
Pick a focused starting point: a sport, a customer and three to six core products. A gym brand might start with compression shirts, shorts, joggers and hoodies. A combat sports brand might start with fight shorts and rash guards. A small, well-made first collection is easier to sample, price and sell.
2. Prepare a tech pack
A tech pack is the instruction manual for each product. It should include:
- Flat sketches of the front and back
- Fabric type and weight (GSM)
- Colors, with Pantone codes
- Logo placements and sizes
- Size range and measurements
- Trims such as zippers, drawcords and elastic
- Labels, hangtags and packaging
No tech pack yet? A reference image and clear notes are enough to start a conversation.
3. Choose fabrics and decoration
Performance wear usually uses polyester or polyester-spandex, which can be fully sublimated. Lifestyle pieces like hoodies often use cotton-poly fleece, decorated with embroidery or screen printing. Read our guide to sublimation vs tackle twill vs embroidery and our hoodie GSM guide for the trade-offs.
4. Order samples before bulk
Never skip samples. A paid sample lets you check fit, fabric, color and stitching, and gives you photos for pre-launch marketing. Request changes, then approve a final sample before bulk production.
5. Add your branding
Private label means your customers only see your brand. That can include woven or printed neck labels, care labels, hangtags, custom polybags and packaging. Decide this early, because labels are part of production.
6. Plan your first bulk order
Start with quantities you are confident you can sell, then reorder best-sellers. Ask about volume pricing tiers so you know how unit cost falls as you grow. Most of our orders arrive in 2–3 weeks from the deposit, with manufacturing and shipping included.
7. Check quality before shipping
Ask for QC photos of finished goods before they ship. Check stitching, print alignment, labels and size accuracy against your approved sample.
8. Payment, shipping and duties
US brands can usually pay overseas manufacturers by international bank wire (T/T) or services such as Remitly. Shipping is tracked to your door. Customs duties and import taxes on goods entering the USA are normally paid by the importer, so build them into your costs.
